What comes to mind when you think of Taiwan? Perhaps you associate Taiwan with the origin of your favorite Gongcha drink? Or with the latest hubs for semiconductor manufacturing? Well, both are correct. But did you know Taiwan is also home to one of Asia’s busiest and most historic ports, one that literally shaped the city around it? In this article I will introduce one of Taiwan’s biggest ports, which shaped not only the city but also the country’s economy.
台湾と聞いて、皆さんは何を思い浮かべますか？ お気に入りのゴンチャの発祥地？ それとも世界最先端の半導体？ どちらも正解です。
でも実は台湾には「アジアで最も歴史があり、最も忙しい港の一つ」があることをご存じでしたか？
その港こそが、街を形づくり、国の経済を支えてきた高雄港です。
Fun fact: the country’s bubble tea consumption is so high that it could, in a single year, line up enough tapioca balls to round the Earth three times.

Gongcha
As Taiwan’s largest international port, the Kaohsiung Port (POK) is situated on the southwest coast, beside the junction of the Taiwan Strait and the Bashi Channel, it provides numerous berths for a multitude of commercial carriers. The port spans a vast land area, blessed with a pleasant climate and tranquil sea waves. Originally a natural lagoon, the port evolved into a modern seaport over the centuries. Imagine this: by the 16th century, small coastal settlements called “Takau” were already thriving here long before bubble tea, semiconductors, or even Taiwan as we know it today.
台湾最大の国際港である高雄港（POK）は、台湾海峡とバシー海峡の交差点に位置し、広大な土地と穏やかな波に恵まれています。もともとは天然のラグーン（潟湖）でしたが、何世紀にもわたり、現代的な国際港へと進化してきました。
By the 16th century, some coastal settlements known as “Takau” had already emerged on what is now Kaohsiung, according to the indigenous people of the area. After arriving in the 1620s, colonists from the Dutch East India Company (VOC) started developing the lagoon at Takau, slowly expanding throughout the Koxinga Era, historically called the “Takau Port” (慓猗港 in Chinese).
想像してみてください。16世紀、この地にはすでに「打狗（Takau）」と呼ばれる原住民の沿岸集落が栄えていました。タピオカも半導体も存在しなかった時代から、この港は人々の暮らしの中心だったのです。
1620年代にオランダ東インド会社（VOC）が到来し、打狗の潟湖を徐々に開発。鄭成功の時代を経て「打狗港」（慓猗港）として整備され、長い歴史の土台が築かれました。
With plans to continue to develop and market Taiwan as a regional commercial hub for enterprises operating in Asia Pacific, the Port of Kaohsiung has been recognized as the country’s principal hub for regional marine transportation and shipping operations. If Taiwan were a heart, Kaohsiung Port would be one of its strongest beats.
アジア太平洋地域の商業ハブを目指す台湾にとって、高雄港はまさに“心臓”のような存在。もし台湾が身体だとしたら、高雄港は一番力強く鼓動している部分と言ってもいいでしょう。
In a continual endeavor to enhance the quality of port services and the efficiency of port operations, the KHB (Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau) continues to enhance systems, services, and programs in a continuous attempt to improve port service quality and operational efficiency—kind of similar to how we keep updating our apps, except this one manages entire fleets of ships, not just your notifications.

Well, at the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal, with a sleek structure that resembles a silver-white gigantic ship, the huge whale-like design is the new icon of Kaohsiung Port as a sustainable green building that combines beauty and utility while also showcasing a feeling of the future.

高雄港旅運中心（クルーズターミナル）は、銀白色の巨大な船のような、滑らかなフォルムが特徴で、まるで海を泳ぐ大きなクジラのようにも見えます。美しさと機能性を兼ね備えたサステナブルなグリーンビルディングとして設計されており、高雄港を象徴する新たなアイコンになっています。

The Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal features a central tower that stands at a lofty fifteen floors. The international passenger immigration hall is located on the first and second levels and offers automatic tax refund machines, AI instant translation machines, foreign currency conversion machines, 22 manual clearing counters, and four two-way face recognition systems, among other sophisticated services. For the convenience of foreign passengers, there are duty-free stores and a food court available upon arrival. With automatic customs clearance service and connections to the circular light rail and Kaohsiung MRT, the cruise terminal can accommodate 250,000-ton mega cruise ships. In short, if airports stress you out, Kaohsiung’s cruise terminal might restore your faith in travelling.
中央には15階建てのタワーがそびえ、1〜2階の入国ホールには自動税還付機、AI即時翻訳機、外貨両替機、22の手動通関カウンター、さらには顔認証システムまで勢ぞろい。海外旅行者に嬉しい免税店やフードコートも完備されていて、到着してすぐに“旅モード”に入れます。さらに、LRTや高雄MRTに直結しているので、市内アクセスも超スムーズ。そして何より驚くのが、25万トン級のメガクルーズにも対応できること。もし空港の混雑で旅がちょっと苦手になっているなら、高雄のクルーズターミナルはきっと“旅の楽しさ”を思い出させてくれるはずです。

Nevertheless, the Port of Kaohsiung’s shipbuilding and maintenance expertise accounts for over 80% of national output and has made Taiwan the world’s fourth-largest yacht manufacturing country, creating a new culture of yacht tourism.

As of now, the Asia New Bay area spans across 600 hectares and features international-grade yacht berths, clubs, and a marine education center, fostering a vibrant waterfront recreational corridor with the port.

According to the Taiwan Yacht Industry Association, 22 out of Taiwan’s 36 pleasure-boat makers are actually based here in Kaohsiung—And we’re not talking small names either. Think Ocean Alexander, Horizon, Outer Reef, Nordhavn, Kadey-Krogen, Fleming… the list of world-class yacht builders calling Kaohsiung home continues.

If you happen to visit during the evenings, you will see reflections of the city lights and the setting sun create a mesmerizing beauty that envelops the port metropolis.

The Pier-2 Art Center / 駁二芸術特区
Make a point of visiting The Pier-2 Art Center if you have an interest in art and immersive open spaces. The District’s irregular art events, which bring in a new wave of southern art, take place in this repurposed site, which was once basin No. 3 of Kaohsiung Port. It now serves as an outstanding open art venue that gives students and artists a platform to express themselves creatively. Look around the District’s public spaces, and you might find some very remarkable works of art hidden in the alley corners.

Red crab at Cijin Beach / 旗津ビーチの巨大赤ガニ
Lastly, if you are more of a chill-vibes person, the Cijin (Qijin) Beach might just be the spot for you. Just as well-known as its Siziwan twin, so much so that swimmers jostle to be the first to sign up as soon as it opens. There is a wide variety of amenities available to visitors to the Bathing Area. Ranging from a cross-country course, a natural ecological area, and a picturesque walk with views of the sea.
最後に、もっと“チルな雰囲気”が好きな人には、旗津（Cijin/Qijin）ビーチがぴったりです。 西子湾（Siziwan）と並んで人気が高く、海水浴シーズンが始まると、利用者が受付開始前から並ぶほどの人気ぶりです。

Modern Operations: Terminals, Cargo, and Transportation / 近代的な港のしくみ：ターミナル・貨物・交通網
Among the reasons why Kaohsiung Port is so powerful is its size, where numerous enterprises, storage zones, and logistical services are supported by the port’s enormous land area of 1,871 hectares and water area of 15,865 hectares.
(It’s bigger than 3,400 Tokyo Domes. Yes, that many.)

With a total of 139 slots, the port can accommodate bulk carriers, container ships, and cruise ships all at once. Collectively, these facilities work together to make Kaohsiung Port the busiest and most modern international seaport in Taiwan. If ports were universities, Kaohsiung would basically be the “Tokyo University of ports” in my opinion.

Its facilities can accommodate some of the world’s largest vessels:
- Bulk carriers up to 200,000 tons
- Container ships up to 22,000 TEU
- Cruise ships up to 225,000 tons

Every year, Kaohsiung handles roughly 12.8 million TEU in container throughput and 95.6 million tons of bulk cargo. Both domestic and international supply chains rely on the port. Isn’t it incredible that an obscure location is secretly shaping our global landscape?

In 2024, supply chain shifts, geopolitical tensions, and climate issues affected global trade. TIPC’s sustainability vision centers on “Low-carbon, Mutual Prosperity, and Resilient Ports,” aligning with the UN SDGs.

Eco fact: Kaohsiung Port was the first port in Asia-Pacific to receive Europe’s EcoPort certification. Basically, being the “top student” of environmental port management.

Terminal Phase 2 uses eco-friendly construction to minimize waste and protect marine ecosystems. The 10-hectare green space in Xiaogang Nanxing houses protected bird species, while Kao Port Park helps regulate the port’s climate and offers beautiful scenery for visitors.
第2フェーズのターミナル建設では、廃棄物を最小限にし、海洋生態系を守るための環境配慮型工法が採用されています。

In order to preserve marine habitats and reduce trash, Terminal Phase 2 utilized environmentally responsible construction practices, as seen from Kao Port’s Park, which helps regulate the port’s climate and gives stunning scenery to visitors, while Xiaogang Nanxing’s 10-hectare green space shelters protected bird species. Where Taiwan is home to over 600+ bird species, making it a paradise for bird-watchers, including near Kaohsiung Port.
海洋生息地の保全やごみ削減のためにも、第2フェーズではこのような環境配慮型の建設方法が徹底されました。 高港公園の豊かな自然や、小港南星の緑地帯に守られた鳥たちはその象徴とも言えます。 台湾には 600 種以上の野鳥 が生息しており、バードウォッチャーにとってはまさに“楽園”。 もちろん、高雄港の周辺でも多くの野鳥を見ることができます。
