Nestled on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, the Port of Toronto serves as a unique and increasingly popular port of call for Great Lakes cruises. On April 22, 2025, the Viking Octantis docked at the city’s Cruise Ship Terminal, marking another exciting chapter in Toronto’s growing cruise tourism. As a vibrant metropolis that blends urban energy with natural beauty, Toronto offers a rich cultural, historical, and ecological experience for travelers arriving by sea. This article introduces the port’s facilities, surrounding attractions, sustainability efforts, and insights from the visitors themselves.
港とクルーズ・ターミナル - The Port and Its Cruise Terminal -
クルーズ客船ターミナルは、トロントのダウンタウンの東、8 Unwin Avenueに位置します。主要な海港に比べると比較的控えめですが、税関施設・地上交通機関・親切な港湾スタッフなど、スムーズに到着できるターミナルになっています。私が訪れた日は、乗客378人を乗せた極地クラスの探検船、バイキング・オクタンティス号から乗客が下船しました。環境に配慮したデザインで知られるこの船は、工業地帯だった港に独特の雰囲気を醸し出していました！(図1)
ターミナルから市街地への移動は簡単です。タクシーやライドシェアが簡単に利用できるほか、クルーズシーズン中はTTCが202番バスを運行し、ユニオン駅などのダウンタウンの交通ハブと観光客を結んでいる。車での移動を希望される方には、近隣にいくつかの駐車場がありますが、一律30カナダドルと、とても高額です。
The Cruise Ship Terminal is located at 8 Unwin Avenue, east of downtown Toronto. While relatively modest compared to major ocean ports, the terminal offers a seamless arrival experience with customs facilities, ground transportation, and helpful port staff. On the day of my visit, passengers disembarked from the Viking Octantis, a polar-class expedition ship carrying around 378 passengers. The ship, known for its environmentally conscious design, added a unique atmosphere to the otherwise industrial port area. (Exhibit 1)
Transportation from the terminal to the city center is straightforward. Taxis and rideshares are readily available, and during cruise season, the TTC operates the 202 bus, connecting visitors to downtown transit hubs like Union Station. For those who prefer driving, several parking lots are located nearby—though be prepared for high parking fees, which can go up to CAD $30 for a flat rate.

ターミナルから徒歩圏内のシュガー・ビーチには、のどかな遊歩道、木陰の遊歩道、夏のリラックスに最適な小さな砂浜があります。ジョギングをする人、犬の散歩をする人、水辺でくつろぐ静かな場所を求める観光客に人気のスポットです。(図2)
さらに、港周辺にはカジュアルなダイニングスポットやフードトラック、軽食や地元料理を提供する季節限定のポップアップベンダーが点在しています。コーヒー、プーティン、新鮮な湖の魚など、便利でおいしい選択肢が近くにたくさんあります。
また、このエリアは文化的な体験への入り口としても機能しているのです。CNタワー、ロイヤルオンタリオ博物館、オンタリオ美術館、セントローレンスマーケットなど、世界的に有名なランドマークへのアクセスも便利です。公共の緑地やウォーターフロントの公園は、内省やレクリエーション会場、写真撮影スポットとしても最適です。 (図3)
Toronto’s port is surrounded by a mix of natural and urban attractions. The Toronto Islands, a beloved escape for both locals and tourists, are easily accessible via multiple ferries and private boat services operating near the port. These islands offer bike rentals, picnic areas, and stunning views of the city skyline.
Sugar Beach, within walking distance of the terminal, features a peaceful boardwalk, shaded walking trails, and a small sandy beach ideal for summer relaxation. It’s a favorite spot for joggers, dog walkers, and visitors looking for a quiet place to unwind by the water. (Exhibit 2)
In addition, the port area is dotted with casual dining spots, food trucks, and seasonal pop-up vendors offering snacks and local fare. Whether you’re in the mood for coffee, poutine, or fresh lake fish, there are plenty of convenient and tasty options nearby.
The area also acts as a gateway to cultural experiences. Just a short 15-minute drive away lies the heart of Toronto, with access to globally recognized landmarks such as the CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, and St. Lawrence Market. Public green spaces and waterfront parks provide additional spots for reflection, recreation, and photo opportunities. (Exhibit 3)

During my time at the terminal, I had the chance to speak with two travelers — a retired couple from the United States. They were on the Great Lakes cruise for the first time and explained that they were drawn to the itinerary because it offered a rare combination of natural beauty and access to major North American cities.
They expressed surprise at discovering that Toronto had a cruise terminal, but praised its functionality, cleanliness, and welcoming environment. “We didn’t expect to dock right in such a major city, and yet the process was smooth and well-managed,” the husband noted. The couple appreciated how easy it was to access local attractions and transportation, especially highlighting their plans to visit the Toronto Islands and explore the downtown core.
They also admired the Viking Octantis for its more personal cruise experience compared to large ocean liners. “This kind of trip feels less commercialized and more meaningful,” said the wife. They concluded by saying that Toronto had left such a positive impression that they were already considering a return visit in the near future.
持続可能な寄港地 - A Sustainable Port of Call -

The Viking Octantis itself represents a new generation of cruise ships focused on sustainability. It uses an energy-efficient hybrid propulsion system, dynamic positioning to avoid seabed anchoring, and recycles nearly all onboard wastewater. Such advancements align with SDG goals 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life Below Water), helping to redefine cruise travel as more eco-conscious.
PortsToronto’s commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in its annual Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) reports, which detail efforts to minimize environmental impact and integrate sustainable practices across operations. Notably, the organization has invested in renewable energy sources and implemented measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to environmental initiatives, PortsToronto is dedicated to fostering strong, healthy, and sustainable communities. Since 2009, it has invested over $28 million in charitable initiatives and environmental programs that benefit communities along Toronto’s waterfront and beyond. These investments support youth, families, and a healthier environment through programs in sport, recreation, arts, and education.
One notable initiative is the “Haul for Hope” plane pull event at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which raised over $100,000 in support of Hope Air’s mission to help patients access essential medical care.
PortsToronto also hosts educational events and environmental awareness campaigns aimed at youth and students, reinforcing the importance of sustainability in transportation and urban development.

As Great Lakes cruises gain popularity, the city’s port will likely see continued growth and infrastructure upgrades.
The experience also demonstrated how ports can serve as community hubs—not just entry points for tourists, but as examples of integrated design, inclusive spaces, and educational outreach. With expanding environmental goals and a vibrant downtown just minutes away, the Port of Toronto is uniquely positioned to model what a 21st-century cruise port should be.
